The ideal candidate will work with the case managers, special education team, and general educators to provide students with inclusive academic and social opportunities. Responsibilities may include attending classes and activities with students, providing content support, student supervision, assistance with daily tasks, organizational and time management support, and working with students in the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Implement instructional plans and programs for assigned students under the general direction of the special education classroom teacher(s), working with students in specific program areas.
- Assist students during individual, small group, or whole class instruction under the direction of a certified teacher.
- Adapt general classroom material/methods as appropriate to meet the needs of students in consultation with the teacher(s).
- Assist with the preparation and management of instructional materials.
- Supervises student(s) in and out of the building and community, i.e., field trips and special events.
- Assist students in the proper use of technology.
- Implement and collect data for behavior management plans for individual students.
- Provide feedback essential for evaluating students’ progress.
- Attend student team meetings.
- Provide student assistance during safety drills.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Direct any and all communication about the student to the special educator.
- Experience working with children/adolescents. Ability to assist students physically as required.
- Ability to show patience, respect, and compassion when working with students.
- Additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Education and Experience. A minimum of a high school diploma plus one year of directly related experience or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired is desired. One year of directly relevant experience in a school setting is desirable and possibly required. Good working knowledge of children. Good understanding of standard classroom operations and teaching methods.
- Strong reading, writing, and math skills. Demonstrated basic understanding of the subject matter being taught to students.
- Language Skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write and correspond. Ability to speak effectively.
- Computer Skills and Experience. Good basic computer skills and experience with word processing programs are required. Experience with Google products preferred. Proficiency with Google Mail or similar email is required.
- Reasoning Ability/Mental Requirements. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills. Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently, and effectively with various individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with peers, subordinates, supervisors, parents, and outside agencies. Ability to show patience, respect, and compassion when working with students. Ability to effectively resolve conflicts and handle stress.
- Other Qualifications. A willingness to attend required or requested training, meetings, and professional growth activities outside of school hours (e.g., summers, teacher in-service days, and after-school). Ability to remain calm and follow protocols in responding to emergencies.
