The successful candidate will work collaboratively with case managers, special educators, general education teachers, related service providers, and other members of the school team to provide students with inclusive academic and social opportunities. Responsibilities may include accompanying and supporting students in classes and school activities, providing academic and organizational support, assisting with daily living tasks, supervising students, implementing individualized supports, and participating in community-based learning experiences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Implement instructional plans, accommodations, modifications, and programs for assigned students under the direction of certified special education staff.

• Support students during individual, small-group, and whole-class instruction.

• Assist students in accessing general education curriculum and classroom activities.

• Adapt classroom materials and instructional approaches, in consultation with the teacher, to meet individual student needs.

• Assist with the preparation, organization, and management of instructional materials and learning environments.

• Support and supervise students within the school building, on school grounds, during field trips and special events, and in community-based settings.

• Assist students with the appropriate use of technology and educational tools.

• Implement behavioral, social-emotional, and individualized support plans as directed by the student’s educational team.

• Collect and document data related to student academic, behavioral, social, and functional goals.

• Provide staff with relevant observations and feedback to support the evaluation of student progress.

• Participate in student team meetings, professional learning opportunities, and other meetings as assigned.

• Support students during emergency procedures, safety drills, transitions, arrival, dismissal, and other school routines.

• Provide assistance with personal care, mobility, daily living activities, or other physical needs when required by a student’s educational program.

• Maintain student confidentiality and adhere to all applicable school, district, state, and federal requirements.

• Direct questions and communications regarding a student’s educational program to the appropriate special educator, case manager, or administrator.

• Establish positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with students.

• Demonstrate patience, flexibility, compassion, professionalism, and sound judgment when working with students.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• Relevant postsecondary education, training, or experience working with children or adolescents is preferred.

• Previous experience working in a school, special education program, youth-serving organization, or related setting is preferred.

• An understanding of child and adolescent development, classroom routines, and instructional practices is desirable.

Academic Skills

• Strong foundational reading, writing, and mathematics skills.

• Ability to understand and support academic content being taught to students.

• Ability to follow instructional plans and provide appropriate academic assistance under the direction of certified staff.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• Ability to communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally with students, colleagues, administrators, families, and representatives of outside organizations.

• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

• Ability to develop positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

• Ability to demonstrate patience, respect, empathy, and compassion.

• Ability to respond constructively to challenging situations, resolve conflicts appropriately, and manage stress in a professional manner.

Technology Skills

• Basic computer and digital literacy skills required.

• Experience with word processing, email, and online productivity platforms required.

• Experience with Google Workspace for Education, including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, and related applications, is preferred.

• Ability and willingness to learn school- and district-specific technology platforms.

Reasoning and Judgment

• Ability to understand and carry out written, verbal, and demonstrated instructions.

• Ability to apply sound judgment and common sense when responding to routine and unexpected situations.

• Ability to remain calm, follow established procedures, and seek appropriate assistance during emergencies or challenging situations.

Physical and Student Support Requirements

• Ability to actively supervise and support students throughout the school day and in a variety of school and community settings.

• Ability to provide physical assistance to students when required by their individualized needs and educational programming, with appropriate training and in accordance with district procedures.
